He was a talented musician playing his trombone in a Navy Unit Band. After his discharge he played for many political events around the Washington, D.C. area with a group called the Dixie Six.
On December 22, 1957 he married his high school sweetheart, DeEtta Onken. To this union  two sons were born, Michael, of Rio Verde, AZ and Russell, of South Riding, VA. He started  his career as a State Farm Insurance agent in July of 1960 with offices in Alexandria and eventually Springfield and Burke, VA. He worked exactly 35 years with State Farm before retiring in 1995 for medical reasons. Among other businesses he operated a store in Arlington, VA (Ballston Common Mall) called Dallas Candies. Upon retirement he and his wife returned to Aurora,  part of the year and spent the winter months in AZ. They loved AZ so much and in 2000 bought a permanent home in Fountain Hills.
