Phyllis (Zehr) Meismer - November 04, 2013Phyllis (Zehr) Meismer, 97, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, in Aurora.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at the Presbyterian Church (United Church of Christ) 930 K St., Aurora. Barbara Johnson will officiate. Interment will be at the Aurora Cemetery following the service. Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Memorials may be made to the Memorial Community Health Inc., Hospice Community Care of Nebraska or United Church of Christ.
Phyllis Maxine (Zehr) Meismer, the daughter of Ervin and Hazel Zehr was born in Hamilton County on Oct. 24, 1916.
She grew up on a farm in Hamilton County, graduated from Aurora High School in 1934 and attended Lincoln School of Commerce. She worked at the Hamilton County Courthouse for five years (1937-1942).
Phyllis Zehr was united in marriage to Dennis L Meismer on April 28, 1940, at her parents’ home, south of Aurora. She was a mother, homemaker and assisted Dennis in their farming operation south of Aurora until his retirement in 1977. In 1977, she and Dennis moved to Aurora. They moved to Grand Island in 1990, and she returned to Aurora in 2007, where she resided until her death.
Phyllis was active in the Presbyterian UCC Church of Aurora and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island, where she served on numerous committees. She was active in Women’s Association, American Home Club, Hamilton County Extension Club Board and L& M Extension Club. She loved antiquing, attending estate sales, playing cards and gardening, especially her flowers.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Hazel Zehr, and her husband, Dennis Meismer. She is survived by her three daughters, Adeline Meismer Yerkes and her husband, Michael, of Edmond, Okla., Linda Pharoah and her husband, Harold, of Omaha and Penny Vollbracht and her husband, David, of Wayne. She is survived by seven grandchildren, Heather Alcorn Hamersky and her husband, David, of Lincoln, David Yerkes and his wife, Ashley Aleman, of Fairview, Texas, Christopher Alcorn of Lincoln, Amy Vollbracht Reeves and her husband, Kyle Reeves, of Lemont, Ill., Andrea Alcorn Samuelson and her husband, Paul Samuelson, of Bend, Ore., Holly Vollbracht of Chandler, Ariz., and Jeffrey Vollbracht and his wife, Daylee, of Waverly, and nine great-grandchildren, Christopher Alcorn, Trevor and Connor Hamersky, Viviana, Grant and Julia Yerkes, Dennis and Dale Samuelson and Olivia Vollbracht.
