Construction activity light PDF E-mail

After a spike in June and July, new construction projects have slowed considerably in 2009, as reflected in the city’s August and September building permits.

A total of three permits were issued at City Hall in August with a value of $4,510, while six permits in September boosted the total by another $79,400.

The August total, in particular, represents a fraction of activity levels recorded in previous years. By comparison, the 2008 month sum was $419,500 and the 2007 tally was $144,091.

Year to date, construction activity for 2009 is well ahead of last year’s pace at $2,996,298 compared to $2,173,220. Both of those running totals pale in comparison to the 2007 figure, however, when Aventine Renewable Energy’s ethanol plant helped boost the figure to $253.1 million.

Housing starts are well off the pace this year and the gap widened in the past two months. Six new single-family dwellings have begun or completed construction through the first nine months of the year, compared to 13 last year and 16 the year before.
