Primary voter turnout hits 46% PDF E-mail

Hamilton County voters turned out in relatively high numbers for Tuesday’s primary election to vote for local issues in Marquette and Hampton, as well as Aurora School Board and county commissioner candidates.

A total of 2,964 registered voters cast ballots -- 46 percent of the 6,430 residents who are eligible to vote

Marquette voters gave their approval to keno, while Hampton voters gave the thumbs up to a bond issue for a new city hall.

In Aurora, school board Pat Shaw, Susan Mitchell, Cory Ohlson, Daniel Pachta, Cyndi Muilenburg and Scott Scheierman advanced to the general election where voters will be asked to vote for three candidates.

In the county commissioner races, two incumbents were unseated.

Becky Richter becomes the first female member of the county board, with a dominating win over Dist. 1 incumbent Doug Andersen by a vote of 389 to 79.

In Dist. 2, Rich Nelson defeated incumbent Wally Driewer 317 to 223.

In Dist. 5, incumbent Tim Bergen and challenger Ivan Hongsermeier ended in a virtual tie at 209-209 as the individual precincts and city wards were counted. But when the long total was run, the count showed 210 votes for Bergen and 209 for Hongsermeier. The winner will likely be determined Thursday when the canvassing board meets.

In the race for a seat on the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District, Eugene R. Ulmer had the most votes, with Stan Boehr second and Becky Roesler third.

In the senate race, Hamilton County voters gave the nod to Ben Sasse. Adrian Smith won the county vote for U.S. Representative Dist. 3.

On the Republican ballot in the governor’s race, Pete Ricketts garnered the most votes in Hamilton County, as did Don Stenberg in the race for state treasurer and Doug Peterson in the race for attorney general. Charlie Janssen was the top vote-getter for state auditor.
