|Commissioner race dead heat|
Local voters decided Tuesday who will fill two of three seats up for grabs on the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners, though the third race ended in a deadlock.
It was a good night for challengers, as Becky Richter defeated incumbent Doug Andersen in Dist. 1 and Richard Nelson defeated incumbent Wally Driewer in Dist. 2.
The night’s drama came in the Dist. 5 race between incumbent Tim Bergen and challenger Ivan Hongsermeier, with both candidates unofficially receiving 209 votes.
“I don’t even know what to say,” Bergen said. “What are the odds? I couldn’t even begin to come up with this scenario.”
“It is something I really didn’t predict,” Hongsermeier said upon hearing the vote totals. “I don’t think anyone else did either.”
The long report tally printed out by election officials Tuesday night differed from the tally of individual precincts, meaning a recount will take place Thursday. If that doesn’t settle it, there will be either a flip of the coin or cutting for high card.
