Dear Editor:
I have been a citizen of Aurora for over 50 years and during this time have seen our community build many facilities without using any tax dollars. Over the years we have had a good partnership with both our county and city in attracting business and industry and then providing housing for these new jobs. In doing so, we have been able to grow our tax base without a local sales tax. Why change what has been working for us? We all pay enough taxes so why another 1-1/2 percent sales tax?
We have in our community six foundations with total assets of nearly $50 million that don’t support a specific facility. These foundations generate $2.5 million annually for grants, scholarships, industrial development, housing, etc.
The Aurora community is envied by many other communities of our size and larger for the culture we have built because of our foundations and our citizens giving of their time, talent and financial resources so that we don’t have to rely on tax dollars.
We can continue growing Aurora without a sales tax. VOTE NO.
Jim Koepke,
Aurora
